Friday Five: Do What?!

Happy Friday!!  Hope everyone has had an awesome week and have a great weekend on tap!  It’s time for a Friday Five and this week’s topic is all about fitness trends that I’d never try.  Between Facebook, Twitter, and now Instagram, I am bombarded daily with fitness ideas and trends.  Some of them I think are cool and I would maybe try it if I learned more about it; others leaving me saying “do what?!”.fridayfivedowhat
Trend #1

I’m not sure if it’s a “fitness” trend, but it’s a trend that is blowing up my Instagram…wraps.  Tummy wraps of all kinds.  I see all of these side by side pictures talking about lost inches, less stretch marks, etc.  I’ve never known anyone to try them so I have no personal knowledge about them.  There is just something about them that screams if it is too good to be true, then it probably is.  I’ll stick with my running, Spanx and sucking in my gut.

Trend #2

Prancercise.  Not necessarily a trend as much as a movement that makes me shrug my shoulders and say “do what?” A cross between running, prancing, and dancing.  Cara and I had our own personal encounter with a pranceriser when she about took us out at the Richmond Marathon.  Cara almost took a hand to the face by the woman.  Who can dodge a prancersiser at mile 22?!Trend #3

It’s only a matter of time before this hits the US.  It’s called Seen on Screen and it’s happening in London.  The whole idea of the classes are using the dance moves from famous videos and you shake it like a superstar for fitness.  They showcase Beyonce, Britney Spears and other dancing divas’ videos and moves.  I love the idea behind this. What a fun idea for a girls fitness night out! The thing that is holding me back from actually doing it, I can’t dance well and I stink at following choreography.  I’m more of a free styler. 🙂

Trend #4

Aerial yoga…it scares me!  I think it looks absolutely beautiful and I don’t doubt that it wouldn’t give you an amazing workout, but I’m terrified of heights and that’s enough to keep me on the ground. Of all the trends, this would be the one I’d try first if I could just get over my fear. 

Trend #5

Orangetheory Fitness and other competitive style classes.  I’m all about giving every workout my best effort and I am competitive with myself, but I don’t like the “on blast” feeling of these type of classes.  The instructors are there to push you to move towards your max heart rate, even calling you out by name.  They also put all your stats on a board in the front of the class.  You are given a heart rate monitor and all of your workout info is out there for everyone to see.  I’m not one who gets motivation that way.  It would also be a tough class for any type of beginners.

Friday Five: Love

I love today’s Friday Five, it’s all about Love! 🙂 And it’s the perfect theme for today too.  Nick and I celebrate our 22nd year together today.  We started dating in college back in ’93 and haven’t looked back since.  This weekend, we’re headed to NYC to celebrate.  The last time we were there was in 2009 when we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary. fridayfivelove

Here’s my Friday Five: Love

1. My Family

This one really doesn’t need much of an explanation, but I love my family to our 3 person and one cat house to my super duper nieces, sisters, mom and dad to my in-laws and all the family in between and far and wide!

2. Running and My Running Family

Just as important to me as my own family is my running family.  We share a special bond!

3. Travel

Travel is important part of my life.  From planning race trips to family vacations, we love to travel!  It can be a short weekend trip to a week long vacation, I love being able to see new places and visit places often that we love.  Nick and I learned to love traveling from our grandparents who took us places often growing up!  We continue the same tradition they started with us with Hayden.

4. Quiet Mornings, Texting, Blogging and Coffee

I cherish the quiet moments where I just have a minute to myself.  I wake up way before I have to each day so that I can have just a bit of time, blogging and enjoying some coffee.  I love those times when it’s still, just before we start our day.  I also spend the better part of my early mornings texting with my early morning girls too.  I look forward to our usual random and funny texts!  We have some very silly convos ranging from Scooby Doo references to our PiYo workouts to the funny pics and videos we send each other.  It starts the day off well.

5. Food, Drink and Eating Out

Just about as much as I love running and mapping routes to run, I like planning out our post run food options.  I also love finding new places to try in the various places we travel to also!  Food and drink is just as much part of the experience of traveling as is the trip itself.  I remember good meals as much as I remember other travel memories!

Blogs to Love!

One of the great plus sides of blogging is all the bloggers you come into contact with online through linkups, comments and Facebook groups.  I find reading blogs, especially ones that have personal stories and race recaps so entertaining to read.   I often search for race recaps before signing up for new races to get an idea of what to expect.  Runner bloggers have a real honestly when it comes to the good, the bad and the ugly of running and races.  I also have stumbled upon some great blogs about food, fitness and life.  Here are five of the many blogs that I follow and read regularly!

Here are this Friday’s Five Blogs to Love:

Mommy Run Fast

I first came across Laura’s awesome blog over a year ago when I saw something posted on Facebook about a virtual race series for the Fall (run 5 or 10 miles by the 5th of each month).  Since I was in the heat of marathon training at the time, I thought it was perfect to help keep me motivated for my weekly runs.   The upside of taking part in the series was seeing my progress each month!  With each run I logged, I was noticing a huge improvement in my 5 mile time.  Since the last series ended this past Spring, I still head over to her blog each week to link up with other bloggers on Monday with my weekly fitness and meal plan.

Jill Conyers

I found Jill’s blog through Laura’s.  Jill co-hosts with Laura on Mondays.  I instantly felt connected to her blog.  She totally speaks my language and I love the combination of running, fitness, food, life and goodies that she blogs about daily.  I think that being a runner is more than just logging miles and she celebrates and brings some insight into the crazy mind of a runner.  I find calmness in a lot of her posts too and she makes me think.  I find inspiration from her blog in ways to become a better me.

Sarah ‘n Spice

I’m not sure how I came across Sarah’s blog, but I’m so glad I did!  Just one look at any of her posts, you instantly want to cook what she’s posting about.  I love the clear directions, pictures, and posted recipes (in blog post and printable versions).  I’ve bookmarked several of her recipes and finally made one of her latest recipes, Tater Tot Hot Dish.  It didn’t come out nearly as pretty as hers, but I know it was equally tasty!  It was a big hit at our house!  When I search for recipes for the week, I make my way over to Sarah’s blog for inspiration.

MCM Mama Runs

A fellow Sweat Pink and Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador, I found Erika’s blog through our daily link love posts in our ambassador group.  I was instantly drawn to her race recaps, which are honest and helpful.  I just recently stumbled upon her post about a half marathon race series and I’m already researching information about it for next year!   I find a connection to her blog also since she’s from DC and we’ve spent so many years up there visiting Nick’s grandparents, I love reading about races in and around DC, MD and VA.  I’m also pretty jealous of her upcoming Ragnar Relay Race.  I can’t wait to read about her experiences!

Taking the Long Way Home

Thankfully Wendy commented one day on a blog post and I followed my way to her blog!  We’ve communicated through comments and both of us are training for a marathon and we’ve both struggled with the same things in our last marathon.  I love the honesty of her posts.  She’s willing to just put it all out there and I find a lot of inspiration from her.  It always seems that she’s posting what I’m thinking.  I’m excited to virtually cheer her on when she takes to her next starting line in a few weeks.  I’ll be rooting for her!
