WIAW: New York Eats

This past weekend, we were in NYC for a long weekend.  Before going, I researched a few restaurants that we would go to.  I had to make sure that the places we chose were child friendly, but still had a good menu and brews on tap.  I mean it’s a vacation for us all!?

Friday early dinner

We got into NYC about 2pm and were really hungry.  We talked towards Times Square and went to Junior’s for an early dinner/late lunch.  Each table also gets a sampling of pickles, cabbage slaw and pickled beets.  The beets were awesome!!  I ordered Something Different, a “sandwich” with 2 potato cakes surrounding beef brisket with mushroom gravy and a side of homemade applesauce.  I also ordered a Captain Lawrence IPA, which was my brew of choice all weekend!fridaylunch

Friday late night

We opted for NY style pizza but I quickly gobbled that up without taking a picture

Saturday Morning

Nick headed down to a little coffee shop right near our hotel and grabbed a few goodies.  He got me an everything bagel and a coffee with a chocolate covered strawberry for breakfast dessert.  We also got an apple pastry that was so heavy and so good! It didn’t stand a chance.  It was nice to have breakfast in bed!saturdaybreakfast

Saturday Dinner

We found this awesome teeny tiny Italian restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen called Patzeria Family and Friends.  It was like sitting in the kitchen of your grandma’s house.  It smelled amazing the minute we walked in and we were so grateful that they had a table.  I ordered penne pasta with vodka sauce and Italian sausage.  It was so good!  Exactly the perfect meal for a cold night! That’s a meal I’ll dream about and crave for a long time.saturdaydinner

Sunday Morning

We had breakfast in bed again.  I forgot a pic of my Dulce de Leche coffee and yogurt.

Sunday Lunch

We went to Ruby Foo’s in Times Square.  It was really cool inside and the food was really good.  Hayden was in heaven!  She loves Asian cuisine.  We ordered wonton soup and lettuce wraps to start and then I ordered Wok Stir-Fry Chicken.  It was sweet and sour, just perfect!  Hayden ordered Beef Udon and took several bites of it, but it was a little too spicy for her.  So we switched entrees.  I was happy to switch!  The beef udon had some good spice to it!  It was really good!sundaylunch

Sunday Dinner

We stopped at the Irish Pub near our hotel for some appetizers and brews before we headed to the airport for our late flight home.  We got a sampler platter of different foods and a chicken quesadilla.  Hayden got a slice of NY cheesecake.sundaysnack

We got to try a bunch of different restaurants and pretty much ate everything we wanted to try.  I do wish we would have hit a burger place considering that’s my favorite thing to eat.

WIAW – Just One

I admit it. I dropped the ball on taking any pictures for this week’s WIAW but with my cravings, my combinations of food would have made even the strong feel a bit weak in the tummy.

There was one treat that I had to have after our date night on Friday. Nick and I enjoyed our usual pre-long run dinner at Rio Grande, our favorite Mexican restaurant. I ordered the steak burrito with rice and beans. It was so good!

After dinner we ran to the grocery store because I needed my Clif bar for the next day’s run. Once we entered the store, I made a beeline for the bakery. I needed something disgustingly sweet and I found this! IMG_2530.JPG

Yup, a Halloween Devil Dog! It was everything I hoped it would be. It took me two days to eat it. 🙂

Have you ever just ate something that you usually would never eat?

WIAW- The Breakfast Edition

This weekend was such a great one!!  Anytime there is a girls’ trip involved, you know it’s all about laughs, running and food.  We decided before we left that we were eating out every meal and we were going to just enjoy it all!  Of all the meals we had, my breakfasts were my absolute favorite!  So here is this week’s WIAW!

On Saturday morning, we got up early to go and cheer on the runners at the Coastal 5K, which started and ended where we staying.  After staying out there for a bit, we ran our shakeout mile and headed back in to change to head to breakfast.  The awesome thing about Myrtle Beach is there is never a shortage of pancake/breakfast houses.  There are a ton of choices!  We went to a place near where we were staying, Eggs Up Grill.  After looking over the menu, I instantly knew I wanted the Greek Omelet with home fries and rye bread toast.  (I’m kind of addicted!)  I added crumbled bacon to my omelet too.  The spinach, tomatoes, black olives and feta were throughout the whole omelet.  I loved that the veggies and bacon were put into the egg batter vs being stuffed into it.  And no breakfast is complete without a great cup of coffee!greekomeletcoffee

Sunday morning, we all ate our usual pre-race breakfast.  For me, that’s a Clif Builder Bar.clifbar

On our way out of town on Monday, we stopped at a breakfast place before we hit the road.   We decided to find a place close to the highway, so we stopped at Hot Stacks Pancake House.  We all felt instantly at home when we walked in!  There were tons of reference to triathlons and they even had a smaller menu with options for pre and post workouts.  As I looked through the little menu, I noticed the Mexican breakfast tacos and had to have that!  It was SO good.  3 corn tortillas stuffed with scrambled eggs, cheese and crumbled bacon with the option to add toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, jalapenos, sour cream and salsa.  I also ordered a side of hash browns.   It was the perfect meal to end a perfect weekend!breakfasttacoshashbrowns

If you could make your perfect breakfast, what would it be?  What’s your favorite breakfast item?

Happy Week!

WIAW – Post Run Eats

For this week’s WIAW, I thought I’d highlight some of this week’s post run grub.  I enjoyed some great food after my runs this week!

After my pacing race on Saturday, I was really craving some salt!  It was so hot and humid for the whole race and I needed to get some salt back into my body.  We ordered some Caldo de Pollo (Chicken soup) on Friday and I instantly knew that’s what I wanted!  Leftover chicken soup.  If you have never treated yourself to Caldo de Pollo, you are missing out!   It is so good!  Shredded chicken over Mexican rice with pico de gallo and slices of fresh avocado all swimming in a warm, flavorful broth!  It has everything that you would want after a long run!caldodepollo

After Sunday’s recovery run, a few of us went out for breakfast to a local diner.  I usually am not in the mood for eggs, but their take on a Greek omelet was calling my name!  It was a 3 egg omelet filled with spinach and feta.  I added diced tomatoes and I wish I would have thought to add mushrooms too!  Missed opportunity!  I chose the hashbrowns and rye bread toast.  It was so good!  The salt from the feta was so good with the spinach and tomatoes.  The hashbrowns were cooked perfectly!  Crispy just like I like them!  I had such a taste for rye bread; it was the perfect choice!popeyeomelet

After Monday’s run, I drank one of my newest favorite drink, Organic Fuel, and I ate a leftover packet of apple slices.  It was exactly what I wanted! organicfuel

WIAW – Girls on the Loose

While Nick was out of town this week for work, Hayden and I took it upon ourselves to eat out or get takeout.  It was a real treat and we pretty much ate anything we felt like eating.  By the end of the week, we were both “fooded” out.  So this week’s WIAW is all about splurging!

Tuesday Night

Hayden was craving a Caesar salad from one of our favorite places, Sticks and Stones.  We headed over there before going shopping.  She got her salad and I got my favorite salad, Dance All Night, and their Magnolia Mountain pizza.  So good!!saladsticks stickspizza

Wednesday night

We had some errands to run on Wednesday so we opted for takeout.  Hayden really wanted some fried chicken.  It’s not something we eat often; can’t even think of the last time we had it.  We went all out!  Mac and cheese, cole slaw and mashed potatoes.  It was well worth the splurge!friedchicken

Thursday night

We opted for burgers on Thursday.  I didn’t snag a picture of that, but I did get one of the Cherry Fritter we grabbed at a local donut shop that we’ve never been too. It was so rich, I only ate half of it! cherryfritter

What food is your splurge?  Have you ever had a week of splurges?

Happy Week!

WIAW – School Lunches

For this week’s WIAW, we are headed back to the school cafeteria!   The school lunches have come a long way since I was in school!  We used to have rectangle pizza with tator tots underneath it.  I mean what was that?!  I find the options they are providing for school lunches are a big improvement over those days.  There are daily fruit and veggie choices, whole grain products, nothing is fried, and salt is limited, if used at all.  One of my eating problems is portion control and with eating school lunches, that is taken care of for me.  I have actually lost 4 lbs since school started by eating at school.

DAY ONE

Entree choices: Beef and Red Chili Burrito or Spicy Chicken Sandwich

I opted for the Spicy Chicken sandwich, Spanish Rice, Salad and Pineapple (which didn’t make it into the photo).  The chicken sandwich is alright and it comes on a whole wheat bun.  I really like the rice, it’s spicy and flavorful.  The salad was a little weak this day, normally it has tomatoes and cucumbers, not sure what happened.   Corn was also an option, but I’m not a big fan of corn.

Day Two

Entree choices:  Cheese/Pepperoni Pizza or Chicken Nuggets

Another chicken day for me, I went with the nuggets vs the pizza.  I’m not a huge pizza eater; I have to be in the mood for it.  I dipped my nuggets in hot sauce.  I usually avoid the baked beans since they aren’t my favorite, but the other option was glazed carrots, so the beans won out!  I had another salad and sliced apples.  The chicken comes with a mini biscuit.  schoollunch2

Day Three

Entree choices:  Pizza Crunchers or Beefy Nachos

I mixed it up today and opted for the Beefy Nachos.  I also had a salad, which did have tomatoes and cucumbers in it this time!  I’m not a big fan of corn or pinto beans, so I opted for peaches as my fruit.  I added cheese and taco sauce to my nachos. schoollunch3

Day Four

Entree choices: Spaghetti with Meat Sauce or Chicken Pattie Sandwich

The spaghetti was my choice for today!  It comes with some buttery garlic bread, which I’m a huge fan of all things bread!  I also went with the green beans and side salad, which was loaded with tomatoes, cucumbers and broccoli.  Finally.

WIAW – Sample Platter

For this WIAW, I decided to highlight some of my favorite eats from the week.  Let’s call it a sample platter of all the yummy goodness that I ate!

This weekend, Cara and I got to try Chuy’s, an Austin, Texas based restaurant that has finally made its way to NC!  I’ve had several people who raved about it and we were excited to give it a try.  With so many tasty sounding choices, we had a difficult time deciding what we were going to order.  We quickly ordered guacamole while we checked out the menu.  It was served with warm tortilla chips and it was really good!   Cara ordered the quesadilla and I ordered a fajita steak burrito.  The real star for me was the creamy jalapeno dip!  Holy smokes that stuff was addictive!  It was like a kicked up ranch dressing and went perfectly with my burrito.  We enjoyed our visit to Chuy’s and look forward to trying it again!chuyguac

Yesterday, we had a variation of our weekly Chicken Caesar salads.  Nick grabbed some pitas and we made stuffed them with the salad mix, grilled chicken pieces and some diced tomatoes.  We loved them!  It was just nice to mix it up a bit on one of our favorite meals. chickenpita

My cheat of the week was some boxed mac and cheese.  I was craving some for a few days now and didn’t want to go to the trouble of making real mac and cheese.  I gave in and it was worth it. macandcheese
Nick grabbed some super big pork chops from the grocery store to go with the mac and cheese (which I ate as an appetizer).  They came out perfectly, just a little salt and pepper!  We love our cast iron skillet.  Man, that thing works awesome on chicken, pork and steak.  porkchop2

What were some of your food cravings this week?  Did you give in?

WIAW – Ultimate Cheat Day

This weekend was full of some randomly good food!  I pretty much ate what sounded good to me post-long run.  Usually I try to be much more conscious about what I eat, but I just gave myself the day to eat whatever I felt like.  The ultimate cheat day!

After our long run, Cara and I hit a local restaurant for lunch.  Our waiter was laughing at us and our random order.

We refueled with chocolate milk.chocolate milk

A side of fried okrafriedokra

After volunteering at the Retro Run 5K, I was craving a Spicy Chicken sandwich and more fries.  I really wanted all the salt I could get.  spicychicken

And while we were watching football on Sunday, we made a huge batch of homemade chicken nachos to snack on throughout the day.  We topped them with grilled chicken, black beans, diced tomatoes, jalapenos and mexiblend cheese.  So good!nachos

What would you eat for your ultimate cheat day? Would it be salty or sweet goodies?

WIAW- Imagination Required!

So this could quite possibly be the worst WIAW ever for me.  I won’t apologize for not having any pictures, that just means that the food was that good, the company was that great and the time I was having had me not even thinking about taking a picture of the food.  I’d say THAT might make this WIAW one of the best!

Anyone else struggle with the same thing? Remembering to take pictures?

If I would have remembered to take a picture…

You would have seen the most amazing plate of chicken nachos.  When Cara and I arrived to Fayetteville on Saturday, we wanted a snack and nachos were calling our name. We were having such a great time people watching and talking, I never took a picture.  The nachos were piled high with tortilla chips and topped with spicy cheese, chicken, jalapenos and lettuce with a sides of sour cream and salsa.

If I would have remembered to take a picture….

You would see a big plate of spaghetti with marinara and two huge meatballs on top.  That was my pre-race meal but the four of us girls were so busy eating and chatting, I never took a picture.   The spaghetti was really tasty and I loved the side salad and garlic bread too.

If I would have remembered to take a picture….

You would have see the most awesome cannoli that I ordered as takeout.  It was the perfect lay in the bed eating dessert.  Cara ordered cheesecake and we both watched tv and ate our goodies!  My cannoli was so good!  Loved the added chocolate chips!  I was too busy eating it to take a picture.

If I would have remembered to take a picture…

You would have see a big huge juicy cheeseburger!  We were all craving burgers after our race on Sunday and I enjoyed one with guacamole, bacon and cheese on it.  It was amazing!  Totally hit the spot!  We were celebrating our runs and talking about the race that I never took a picture.

If I would have remembered to take a picture…

You would see a Starbucks Salted Caramel Mocha, one of the many reasons why I love fall!  I have been waiting for this to make its return!  Cara and I were chatting the whole way home in the car, I never took a picture.

And finally, a picture!!

Here’s our no frills but super tasty dinner from Monday night.  Nick was grill master again on the cast iron and grilled up some chops.  We just salt and peppered them and they came out perfectly!  We had a side of mashed potatoes and some roasted corn.  It hit the spot!porkchop

Hope your imagination loved the meals as much as I did!  🙂

Happy Week!

WIAW – Labor Day Grub

It’s the last hurrah of the summer, Labor Day weekend!  Time to prepare for cooler temps, Fall festivals, settling into a school routines, and hearty food.  This weekend we had not one but TWO cookouts to attend and they were not without some delicious food.  So for this WIAW, I bring you my Labor Day Grub.

Sunday’s Cookout

My family and my sis’ family headed to our parent’s house for a cookout.  We had a potluck cookout where we all brought our own meat and a side to share.  We bought ground meat for burgers for this week’s plan, so we just used it for the cookout instead.  I also made my super yummy, highly addictive spinach dip and a simple to make Italian pasta salad.  I’ll post both recipes tomorrow so come back and check that out!

laborday1

Here’s that yummy spinach dip!  spinachdip2

Monday’s Cookout

It was Nick’s family’s side for Monday’s cookout.  His dad made some amazing ribs, his brother brought some baked beans and we brought our favorite Southwestern chopped salad.  Everything was so tasty and although I can take or leave ribs usually, I was in love with these ones.  They were seriously the best ones I’ve ever had.  laborday2

And for dessert….homemade ice cream and a chocolate chip cookie!laborday3

Check what other folks are eating over at Peas and Crayons for WIAW.

Happy Week!
